There were many very interesting characters in this film. The first being the mother, Mama Elena. It is difficult to know if she was always so angry, or if this occurred with the death of her husband. The way she treated Tita with such hatred was shocking. It was as though Tita were born a servant, and not her own flesh and blood. Although she was not much kinder to her other children. You know the thought had to have crossed her mind. Nacha was a wonderful character who shaped Tita into the wonderful, caring person that she was. The skills she bestowed upon Tita, the ability to cook and to nurse those who were in need are what enabled Tita to get through the tormented days she endured until her mother died. How sad for Tita that Nach died when she did. Gertrudis, WOW. She knew she had to get away from her mother as quickly as she could, and she did. Another blow to Tita, who was now alone with her mother, Pedro and Rosaura and the baby. I was very happy to hear Gertrudis tell Tita that she shouln't worry about how Rosauro felt when she married Pedro knowing he and Tita were in love. Pedro was so in love with Tita that he married her sister just to be close to her. Even though I wanted Tita and Pedro to be together I was disappointed when they did make love before Rosaura died. Maybe if they had run away I would have been more understanding, I just felt that he should leave Rosaura before he was with Tita. I think I really wanted Tita to marry Dr. John Brown and live happily ever after. He was so kind, and seemed to only want the best for Tita. He was so unselfish that he agreed to marry Tita even though he knew she had slept with Pedro. I really felt that he loved her even more than Pedro. I really enjoyed this movie.
Lisa Lynam: Angela your post was very interesting. I agree with you about the fact the John was a very unselfish man and want to marry Tita even though she had been with Pedro. Also the character of Nacha was the most fasciating in how she cared for Tita and gave her the love of the kitchen and food. Tita always told people the food was good because it was made with LOVE. The love Pedro and Tita had was a typical love/hate relationship till the end. The undying love they had and the scene of them making love wiht Pedro dying and Tita eating the matches proved to be there love would never be the same, to die together is better thatn not being together at all. I also agree this was agreat movie, shows alot about the family values in the hispanic world.
ReplyDeleteI think I did marry a character just like John. An unselfish, kind and wonderful man that allows me to be who I am. I was very sad that Tita did not folow that path. She was a wonderful woman that stayed true to her relationship with her one love, Pedro. But I felt that he was not the same. Pedro was selfish, he wanted his cake and ate it too. He eventually was with Tita, but instead of standing up to her mother and spending the rest of his life with the love of his life, he tried to appease everyone and ended up ruining his life and Tita's.
ReplyDeleteI agree there were lots of characters in the movie. Dona Elana was one I didn't care for at all. She was so mean. She treated Tita like a servant, burned her daughters birth certificate and didn't even cry when her grandson died. I thought Dona Elana was quite scary as a ghost too. She was very creepy during her life and when she was protrayed as a ghost. I too felt sorry for Dr Brown. He was such a kind and caring man. he seemed so gentle when he brushed Tita's hair. I think he gave Tita the most compliments. I was also disappointed that Tita and Pedro were unfaithful. Nacha was such a caring person toward Tita. When Tita would hear her voice, it was always with helpful suggestions or in a caring manner. This was very unlike how Dona Elana appeared as a ghost.

We learn early on in the movie why Tita's mother was like she was, she also loved someone that she could not have. Remember her husband died after hearing that the child was not his.
ReplyDeleteTita was treated like she was because of tradition. She was the youngest daughter and was born into a life of servitude, she was expected to care for her mother until until her death. Luckily for Esparanza the family tradition is no more!
As far as Gertrudis is concerned I do not think that she was running away from her mother but after eating the rose sauce she was finally able to allow her passion to be released. After eating the rose sauce she ran to the shower to cool off only to have her inner passions set the whole shower on fire. She ran out and into the arms of her later to be husband. Gertrudis was passionate about everthing that she did, the revolution, the men she commanded, her husband and later her children.
I would have loved to see Tita and Pedro live happily ever after but what a way to go! To die with the one you love by your side and having that love which has been pent up inside for so many years totally engulf you in flames, what a love story!
